Spatially aware inspection model identifies location-dependent anomalies and improves defect detection performance
OTTAWA, Canada – October 28, 2026 – Averian announced the availability of Averian Spatial Detector, a new anomaly detection model Averian has developed within its AI Validator visual inspection platform. The model incorporates spatial information into inspection decisions, enabling manufacturers to identify defects whose significance depends on where they occur on a device under test.
In internal testing against selected existing AI Validator models, Spatial Detector reduced missed defects by up to 30% and false alarms by up to 40%. These results indicate the potential to improve inspection reliability while reducing unnecessary review of acceptable parts.
Spatially aware anomaly detection
Non-spatial models can identify irregularities such as contamination, scratches or surface defects, but may not adequately distinguish between identical features appearing in acceptable and unacceptable locations. Averian’s Spatial Detector addresses this challenge by incorporating the anomaly location into its assessment, supporting inspections with position-dependent acceptance criteria.
For example, in a semiconductor inspection scenario, minute particle contamination near the edge of a wafer may be acceptable while similar contamination in an interior region is considered a defect.

In Averian’s comparative demonstration, models were trained using the same set of acceptable images containing edge contamination. The spatially aware model identified contamination in an unacceptable interior location that the non-spatial model did not flag.

Missed Non-spatial model Non-spatial detection learned what contamination looks like, but not where it is unacceptable, so the particle appears normal and the part passes.

Caught Averian Spatial Detector Spatial Detector learned where contamination is acceptable and correctly identified a dust particle in an unacceptable region, flagging the contamination.
Applications across precision manufacturing
Averian Spatial Detector is designed for inspection applications where component placement, alignment and location-specific tolerances are critical to product quality. Applications include assembly verification to confirm the presence and correct positioning of parts; electronics and PCB inspection to identify component placement and alignment anomalies; semiconductor contamination detection; and precision manufacturing environments where acceptance criteria vary across different regions of a component.
Integrated into existing AI Validator workflows
Averian Spatial Detector is available as a model selection within AI Validator alongside Precision Detector and Pattern Detector. Users can configure it through the platform’s existing model settings while keeping their current data capture, training and testing workflow.

The development of Spatial Detector also demonstrates Averian’s expertise in engineering specialized AI models to address complex inspection requirements. Where general-purpose models cannot adequately address application-specific challenges, Averian develops tailored solutions that incorporate the capabilities required for reliable performance.
This expertise extends beyond AI Validator to custom AI model development and software solutions for customers with specialized technical and operational requirements.
